Shaftesbury Abbey

Welcome to the Education Service

We welcome enquiries from schools, pre-schools and nursery schools who would like to visit either or both of the museums, or have an outreach visit.

At the Abbey Museum we can cater for visits of up to 30 children, divided into groups. You can choose from artefact handling, role-play, storytelling, and themed hands-on activities which involve problem-solving and interpretation.

For pre-school children and Key Stage One, we offer a session on toys, and another with stories and nursery rhymes, both based on objects in the collections.

We can visit you in school with our themed outreach boxes for the Saxon/Medieval and Tudor periods. We have developed an archaeology and excavation toolbox, and can help you organise your own dig at school. These activities are all suitable for Key Stage 1, 2 and 3. We can also cater for Key Stage 4 and above. Please ring to discuss your requirements. Future developments will include Roman Britain, Victorian Britain and WWII.

Please get in touch if you have other topics in mind, and we can develop a session for you.
